A First Grader Now…

Yup, he survived. Xander survived his first day of first grade! He woke up this morning to his very own alarm and got right out of bed. I don’t expect this to continued, but a mother can hope! He even ate breakfast, got dressed and brushed his teeth without a single whinny moment. It was quite nice and quite different. He isn’t much of a morning person and often wakes up on the wrong side of the bed, but, apparently today was going to be a completely different day.

Then we all piled into the Honda and set off for school. We were all so anxious, and us parental units even more so than the little boy who was going to be going to class and sitting through his first day of First Grade! To Xander, this was like any other day of school. You get up early and off to school to write and play and do all those fun school things. For us, its a milestone, a time to take a bazillion pictures and fight back our tears. It’s just another moment in his life to remind us how much he has grown and how grown up he really is. We don’t have to hold his hand on the first day of school or walk him to class or buckle his seat belt, only the occasional shoe tying moment or “Mom, can you open this?”. It’s almost heartbreaking but a wonderful realization too. Our little boy, isn’t so little anymore.

We got to school and Auntie Nina pointed us in the right direction and we headed off for the play ground. There were a few kids already in line but we just hung out for a bit waiting to see some other kids, to see how many from his kinder class would be in his class this year. Zoey had the hardest time trying to understand what was happening. She was stuck to Xander like glue. Followed him around and laughed and smiled at him and ran circles around him. She didn’t want to say bye bye, this was her Xander and she didn’t want him to leave!! It’s ok Zoey, I promise he will be home soon. A few minutes later, he asked me “Mom, why are you still here?” What an angel! Like I said, he’s growing up.. maybe a little too fast for mom.

His teacher, Ms. Cole, came out to get them minutes later and he walked off to class without a single look back. He was so excited and so anxious and I think he was so happy to finally get to see his new classroom! So were we. All the first grade class rooms are on the same side of the school so we also got to see some of the other parents from Xander’s kinder class last year so that was really nice. We knew he was going to have a great day. Just couldn’t wait to hear about it seven hours later!

Almost seven hours later, Zoey and I went to pick Xander up from school. I couldn’t wait to hear about his day! He had a great day! Just like we thought he would. He said first grade is even more fun than kindergarten and he loved his class and the new bigger play ground and his teacher was perfect! It was so great to hear how wonderful his first day was. The only thing he didn’t like about this day… how crazy hot its was! I think I can deal with that!

We are going to enjoy the next nine months of his first grade year because before we know it, he is going to be a second grader. One day we are going to blink and he is going to be in middle school. They grow up so fast and in a blink of the eye they are towering over you and teaching you more new things than you even knew. I can’t wait to see what kind of young man he will grow into, but for now, first grade it is!!! Congratulations, Xander, on a very successful first day of first grade!
